Teenager survives as Edo road accident kills nine wedding guests
Nine persons reportedly lost their lives while travelling for a wedding in Ewato in the Esan South-East Local Government area of Edo State on Saturday after a Sienna vehicle conveying the passengers collided with a truck laden with cement.
Eyewitnesses, however, disclosed that a teenager was the only survivor of the road mishap.
The accident was said to have occurred at Ekpon junction along Agbor-Ewohimi Road in Igueben LGA, while the truck was travelling to the eastern part of the country.
Expectedly, an irate mob in Ewato reportedly set ablaze the truck, while the driver escaped into a nearby bush to escape their wrath.
According to The PUNCH, the wedding reception ended abruptly when news filtered in that the crash involving the Sienna vehicle has killed nine out of the 10 passengers.
While the only survivor, a yet-to-be-identified boy, was taken reportedly taken the intensive care unit of Shillo Hospital in Ewohimi, the remains of the deceased were deposited at the mortuary of the same hospital.
Edo Sector Commander of the Federal Roads Safety Corps, Henry Benamaisa who confirmed the accident, stated that five persons died on the spot, while others were rushed to the hospital.
“The accident was as a result of excessive speeding and loss of control. The sienna was trying to dodge something and left his lane and rammed into the truck. The two drivers were speeding.”
