British High Commissioner to Nigeria Richard Montgomery has celebrated Team Nigeria’s Glasgow 2026 performance after the country finished as Africa’s highest-ranked nation at the Commonwealth Games with 24 medals.
According to The Punch, Montgomery hosted Nigerian athletes, coaches and officials at a reception in Abuja on Friday to recognise their achievements at the Games, which featured thousands of competitors from across the Commonwealth.
Nigeria ended the competition with 10 gold, seven silver and seven bronze medals. The performance placed the country inside the overall top 10 and ahead of every other African nation at the Games.

Speaking at the reception, Montgomery praised the Nigerian contingent for displaying talent, determination and resilience throughout the competition.
He said the athletes’ achievements also demonstrated how sport could strengthen the relationship between Nigeria and the United Kingdom.
The envoy noted that sporting competitions provide opportunities for people from different countries to connect beyond politics and diplomacy, adding that the reception reflected the longstanding Commonwealth ties between both countries.
Officials from the National Sports Commission, Nigerian Olympic Committee and British High Commission joined athletes and coaches at the event.
NSC promises greater support for athletes
National Sports Commission Chairman Shehu Dikko described the performance as a source of pride for Nigerians and said the athletes had once again demonstrated the country’s sporting potential.
Dikko said attention would now shift towards building on the success recorded in Glasgow.
He promised that the commission would strengthen support systems around athletes and provide the resources required to prepare them for future international competitions.
According to him, the achievements in Glasgow included record-breaking performances and significant milestones that showed what Nigerian athletes could accomplish with proper preparation.
British High Commission Head of Communications Aseosa Uwagboe also praised the athletes and officials for representing Nigeria with distinction.
She said sport remained one of the strongest links between Nigeria and the UK because it promotes shared values such as determination, respect and excellence.
The Abuja reception capped a successful Commonwealth Games campaign for Team Nigeria, whose 24-medal haul ensured the country left Glasgow as Africa’s leading performer.
