A Mexican high school teacher has sparked outrage after allegedly forcing his students to wear cardboard boxes on their heads to stop them from cheating during an examination.

The Sun reports that some furious parents have demanded that the teacher identified as Luis Juarez Texis be sacked after “humiliating” the children with the “violent” teaching method.

According to local press, the parents have asked the authorities to “protect the rights of the students” at Campus 01 of the Colegio de Bachilleres Del Estado De Tlaxcala (College of Bachelors of the State of Tlaxcala) in central Mexico.

The students wore the boxes with eye holes cut out in a bid to block their peripheral vision to stop them copying their neighbour’s work.

One outraged parent wrote on Facebook:

“We hope that this type of violence against the Tlaxcalteca youth is not overlooked, and that the federal and state authorities dismiss this public official and that they cease this type of humiliation in a space destined for learning.”

Responding to the backlash, the school explained that it was a “dynamic exercise” to help “the students’ psychomotor development”.

They also said that the students had consented to the exercise beforehand and that it “respects human and individual rights”.

There are, however, reports that the teacher was later suspended when the parents were not satisfied with the school’s initial response to their outrage.
