The Borno State Police Command has arrested a 30-year-old teacher, Bukar Modu, for beating a 10-year-old pupil, Bashir Babaji, in the Bulabulin area of Maiduguri.
A video of the incident went viral over the weekend, showing the teacher flogging the young boy with a whip. In the video, another child was seen pouring water and sand on the pupil while the teacher pinned the boy down with his leg, ignoring his cries.
Police spokesperson, Kenneth Daso, confirmed the arrest in a statement on Monday. He said the incident happened on March 16, 2025, and the boy was beaten because he missed class.
Daso said, “The Borno State Police Command wishes to inform the general public of the arrest of one Bukar Modu, 30 years old, in connection with a viral video that surfaced on social media showing the physical abuse of a minor in the Bulabulin Alajeri area along Baga-Road, Maiduguri.”
He added, “Preliminary investigations revealed that the child, who is his student, was allegedly punished for absconding from class.”
The police explained that the video caused serious public concern, and with the help of the community and the Civilian Joint Task Force, they were able to arrest the suspect.
The boy has since been taken to the hospital for treatment, while the suspect remains in police custody.
“The case is still under investigation and will be charged in court,” Daso said.
He also urged the public to remain calm and avoid sharing angry or disturbing messages online that could affect the investigation.
“The Borno State Police Command remains committed to upholding justice and ensuring the safety and welfare of all children in the state,” the statement concluded.
