TCN restores electricity to six North-East states after prolonged blackout

The Transmission Company of Nigeria has announced the full restoration of power to the six North-East states after several days of darkness.

The TCN confirmed this in a statement issued on Sunday by its spokesperson, Ndidi Mbah. According to the company, electricity supply was restored on June 19 around 4:45pm after the successful connection of a new transmission substation in Bauchi to the national grid.

“The lines were initially switched off to enable TCN to energise the new Bauchi Substation, one of the biggest substations in the region to the grid,” the statement said.

The blackout had affected several states in the North-East, but power has now returned following the reconnection of the Jos-Bauchi-Gombe transmission line.

Mbah explained that the new Bauchi 330/132 kilovolt transmission substation was linked to the grid through the 330 kV and 132 kV Jos-Bauchi-Gombe lines. These lines are part of a larger national power network which includes over 111 330kV lines stretching 8,792 kilometers and 163 132kV lines covering 7,933 kilometers.

She said the network also includes 57 high-voltage substations and 186 lower voltage substations across the country. Together, the infrastructure supports a grid capacity of 8,700 megawatts.

The company also raised concerns about increasing vandalism of its facilities, blaming it for the growing instability in power supply. “2024 and 2025 have been the most difficult years for TCN due to constant sabotage and damage to its facilities by non-state actors,” the statement said.

Mbah called on residents and local communities to help protect these critical national assets. “When communities protect power infrastructure, they are also helping the economy and supporting national development,” she said.

The TCN warned that such attacks by vandals continue to threaten the delivery of stable electricity in Nigeria and urged collective efforts to stop the damage.
