Former presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has defended his alliance with figures in the African Democratic Congress facing corruption allegations, drawing on a biblical analogy to justify his position.
Speaking during an interview on Magic FM Aba in Abia State, Obi referenced the example of Jesus Christ to support his argument that engagement with controversial individuals can lead to transformation.
“When Jesus came here, his friends were tax collectors and prostitutes because it’s all part of what he was trying to change. It was all part of what he was trying to build as a person,” Obi said.
He argued that collaborating with individuals accused of wrongdoing should not be dismissed outright, noting that such interactions could create opportunities for reform, particularly if they are eventually found guilty.
Obi also criticised what he described as selective application of the law by security agencies, alleging that some individuals with more serious allegations continue to move freely while others are being targeted.
He further claimed that certain politicians currently facing corruption accusations are victims of political persecution, specifically mentioning former Attorney General of the Federation Abubakar Malami and former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai.
“Everybody knows the contributions of Malami and El-Rufai to the present government. So why are they being persecuted?” he asked.
“The law is very selectively applied… people who have done worse are moving around like stars, while this government is busy targeting those they think are political opponents,” he added.
