The Joint Military Task Force overseeing the protection of oil and gas assets in the Niger Delta has issued a stern warning to its troops, cautioning against acts of sabotage and involvement in any illegal activities during their duty.

The newly appointed Commander of the JTF, codenamed Operation Delta Safe, Rear Admiral John Okeke, delivered the warning during a familiarisation tour of security formations in Bayelsa state on Thursday, February 29.

He emphasized the gravity of the consequences, stating, “Stiff disciplinary actions await whoever is caught for such unprofessional conduct.”

Okeke sought increased support and collaboration from military formations in Bayelsa, aiming to strengthen the force’s effectiveness in maintaining security and curbing criminal activities in the region.

During a courtesy call on Rear Admiral Samson Bura, the Flag Officer Commanding, Central Naval Command, Okeke sought guidance and support against issues such as oil theft, pipeline vandalism, and other criminalities related to the oil and gas sector.

Bura pledged to sustain and improve existing support and collaboration between the JTF and the Naval Command, aiming for a secure maritime domain conducive to legitimate activities.

The OPDS Commander also visited Air Vice Marshal Tajudeen Yusuf, the Air Officer Commanding (AOC) Mobility Command, Yenagoa.

He requested similar support and synergy from the Command in combating threats within the region. AOC Yusuf expressed readiness to continue supporting the JTF, emphasizing a shared focus on ensuring a safe environment for lawful activities.

Expressing gratitude for the support received, Commander Okeke assured that the JTF would maintain vigilance to provide a conducive environment for the smooth operations of both international and local oil companies, as well as other legitimate stakeholders in the Niger Delta.

During an operational visit to the Nigerian Naval Ship (NNS SOROH), Commander Okeke commended the troops for their efforts in enhancing oil production and urged them to stay vigilant.

He reiterated the warning, stating, “We wish to warn the troops against sabotage and engagement in any illegal activities while discharging their duties.”
