The Wurkun Youth Association of Nigeria has made an urgent appeal to the Nigeria Police to address the recent spate of killings in Usmanu village, located in the Karim-Lamido local government area of Taraba State.
During a press conference held on Friday in Jalingo, the group highlighted the alarming rise in violence in the area. Led by National President Hussaini Audu Zuppai and Secretary Issah Danladi Maiyaki, WUYAN called for swift action from the police to uncover those responsible for the killings on November 15, 2023, January 11, 2024, and June 2, 2024.
“Nobody is above the law, and the intelligent professional prowess of the Nigerian security agencies can never be undermined in times of detection and prosecution of crimes including conviction of criminals,” said Zuppai.
The group emphasized the importance of peaceful coexistence among the Wurkus and other tribes in the region, asserting that holding perpetrators accountable would significantly contribute to peace.
They urged the police to take extraordinary measures to identify and prosecute those behind the murders. “We also want to call on the Commissioner of Police to deploy skilled and well-trained personnel to restore sanity and uphold the dignity and integrity of the Nigerian Police Force in Usmanu village,” Zuppai added.
WUYAN also acknowledged the efforts of the state governor in promoting peace and urged him to consider the dire situation in Usmanu village by reinforcing security to protect the lives and property of the residents.
In their appeal, the group provided a detailed account of the victims in the community, stressing that the continued killings of Wurkuns in Usmanu village must be stopped by the security agencies.
