Taraba budgets N6b for secondary education

The Taraba State government says it has allocated more than N6 billion for the improvement of secondary schools in the state in the 2022 fiscal year.

Mr Solomon Elisha, Commissioner for Budget and Planning, made this known on Monday at the 2022 budget breakdown by the ministry in Jalingo.

Elisha said that the amount comprised both personnel and operational cost of the board.

He further stated that the government was in the process of recruiting new teachers for the post primary education in the state.

The commissioner noted that the money was budgeted to address the challenges of inadequate teachers in secondary schools as well as the challenge of monitoring and evaluation.

He also explained that the board had many teachers posted to all secondary schools across the state which therefore, required a huge allocation.

Entitled: “The Peoples’ Budget’ said that prior to the budget presention, the ministry adopted the consultative strategy in which town hall meetings were held in the three senatorial zones in the state to identify the people’s demands .

The commissioner noted that the Ministry of Works is allocated N9.4 billion being the highest, while the Ministry of Water Resources receives N5.9 billion.

Similarly, while Ministry of Rural Development was allocated N3.04 billion and Ministry of Women Affairs and Child Development receives N4.7 billion.

Elisha explained that the state government had signed into Open Government Partnership, a multi-national organisation advocating transparency in public finance management.

“In this regard, civil society organisations are strong stakeholders in the governance of the state and must be carried along,” he said.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the total reccurent expenditure in the fisical year is N78 billion while the total capital expenditure is N71.7 billion totalling N149 billion.
