A petrol tanker exploded on Karu Bridge along the Abuja-Nyanya-Keffi Road on Wednesday, setting off a huge fire that destroyed at least 30 vehicles and caused panic among road users.
The incident happened when the tanker, carrying Premium Motor Spirit, lost control and crashed on the bridge. The impact caused a powerful explosion, and flames quickly spread to nearby vehicles.
Eyewitnesses told the PUNCH they heard loud blasts, followed by thick smoke filling the sky. People ran in different directions to escape the fire.
One witness, Musa Aliyu, described the scene, saying, *“The fire was massive. People were shouting and running. Some drivers abandoned their cars and ran for safety.”*
Emergency responders, including firefighters and security personnel, arrived at the scene to control the fire and manage traffic. Officials blocked the road to prevent further danger.
As of press time, rescue operations were still ongoing, and authorities had not confirmed the number of casualties.
