A diesel tanker carrying 15,000 litres of fuel crashed and spilled its contents on Wednesday night at the Toll Gate area along the Ibadan-Ife Expressway.

The accident happened around 8:11 pm when the tanker driver reportedly lost control, causing the vehicle to somersault and veer off the road.

Chairman of the Oyo State Fire Service, Maroof Akinwande, confirmed the incident in a statement on Thursday. He said the agency responded quickly to prevent a fire outbreak.

“The agency’s personnel, led by CFS Adedeji, swiftly responded to the emergency call. On arrival, we met a fallen MAN trailer tanker with registration number Lagos: EPE 299 XN of 15,000 litres capacity, loaded with Automotive Gas Oil, which had lost control while in motion and swerved to the roadside, with its content gushing out,” Akinwande said.

He explained that fire service officials poured chemical foam on the spillage to neutralise any possible flame from the fuel, which could have caused a fire.

According to him, “The accident was due to a lack of absolute concentration whilst driving by the truck driver. Vehicular movement has been restored to the road.”

Officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps were also at the scene to help control traffic and ensure safety.
