Another accident has occurred at Kara Bridge along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, marking the third major road incident reported on the busy corridor within one week. According to eyewitness information and photographs obtained from the scene, the accident involved an articulated truck, a Toyota pickup and a Honda SUV. The images showed extensive damage to the front section of the Honda, while the pickup also appeared damaged near the truck. Details about possible injuries or casualties were also unavailable. Traffic and emergency authorities had yet to provide an official account of the incident. Third accident episode raises safety concerns The latest Kara Bridge crash follows two major accident episodes recorded at the same location within a few days. Earlier in the week, a fully loaded trailer carrying bags of flour overturned after hitting the bridge’s side rail. The driver suffered serious injuries and received medical attention. Preliminary findings linked that incident to overloading, which reportedly caused the driver to lose control of the truck. Another major disruption occurred on Friday when a crash involving five articulated trucks and a Toyota Sienna blocked the outward section of the expressway. One person died, while another sustained injuries during the collision. Five other people escaped without injuries. While emergency officials were clearing the wreckage, a commercial bus crashed on the Lagos-bound carriageway. Authorities attributed the second crash to brake failure and rescued the injured driver. Repeated crashes disrupt major highway The accidents caused severe congestion around Kara Bridge, Ojodu Berger and adjoining routes. Many commuters abandoned their vehicles and continued their journeys on foot. Kara Bridge serves as a major link between Lagos, Ogun and other parts of the country. Heavy commercial vehicles use the corridor daily to transport goods into and out of Lagos. The frequency of recent accidents has renewed concerns about speeding, overloading, poor vehicle maintenance and brake failure among articulated vehicles. Motorists have called for stronger enforcement of road safety rules around the bridge. They also want traffic agencies to increase monitoring and respond quickly to broken-down vehicles. Road users approaching Kara Bridge have been advised to drive carefully, maintain safe distances and prepare for possible traffic delays while officials clear the latest scene.
