Sugabelly accuses LGBT groups of hijacking #EndSARS protests

Published

Blogger Sugarbelly has kicked against the LGBT groups who have allegedly hijacked the EndSARS protests in Nigeria.

In a series of tweets, Sugarbelly spoke against them for displaying their flags at the protests which has nothing to do with their struggle.

She stated that their action is “literally creating another protest within the main protest.”

She wrote:

“Nigerians are homophobic and rights for LGBQ people are trash in Nigeria, and we will table that one in its own time, but please, it is wrong for LGBQ people or LGBT groups to hijack the #EndSARS protest for their own cause.

Bringing your own flags etc divides the campaign focus and I’ve noticed this is a thing that happens with protests in general and nobody ever says anything about it because nobody wants to be branded homophobic

But if you look at most protest images, there is always an LGBT group that comes with their own flags different from others A movement in Nigeria specifically about LGBT rights is long overdue. And that’s one thing in of itself.

But there’s a bad habit of hijacking movements and protests about other equally important things to push for LGBT rights that must stop. Don’t dilute this protests focus. Don’t come to a protest about police brutality, about ending SARS with a rainbow flag or a pink and blue flag, chanting your own slogans or carrying your own placards different from the main group. That’s literally creating ANOTHER protest within the main protest. It’s unfair.

If you want the next protest after #EndSWAT #EndSARS to be LGBT Rights Protest, no wahala. But don’t see people protesting for A, then come and start your own protest for Inside their protest that is not even concluded, then get angry when they push back or reject you.”
