Leaders of the organised Labour in the Federal Capital Territory moved from school to school on Tuesday, enforcing the nationwide strike called in response to the recent brutalization of the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Joe Ajaero, in Owerri, Imo State.
Both the NLC and the Trade Union Congress are actively participating in the strike, which has the potential to disrupt activities in public universities, as the Academic Staff Union of Universities has indicated its members will comply with the directive.
The labour leaders reportedly arrived at various school premises in the morning, before regular activities were set to begin, and insisted on closing the gates to prevent staff and students from entering.
Unaware of the strike action, staff and students who had arrived waited for hours before being advised by school authorities to return home until there was an announcement to the contrary.
In one of the schools, teachers were heard expressing frustration, stating that they should have been informed not to come to work to save petrol.
The nationwide strike is a show of solidarity by various labour unions in protest of the reported assault on the NLC president.
The strike action has already caused disruptions in different sectors across the country.
