Strickland stuns Israel Adesanya, become new UFC middleweight champion
Sean Strickland pulled off a stunning upset at UFC 293, defeating Israel Adesanya by unanimous decision to become the new middleweight champion.
The fight was expected to be a one-sided affair, with Adesanya the heavy favorite.
However, Strickland came out aggressive and dropped Adesanya with a clean right hand in the first round.
Adesanya survived the early onslaught, but Strickland continued to pressure him throughout the fight.
Strickland’s volume and takedowns were too much for Adesanya to handle, and he was awarded the victory by all three judges.
The win is a major upset and makes Strickland one of the most unlikely champions in UFC history.
He was not even supposed to be in the main event, but stepped in as a late replacement for Dricus Du Plessis.
In the post-fight interview, Strickland said that he was ready to embrace his inner Michael Bisping and give a little bit to the gods.
He also said that he was ready to fight anyone in the middleweight division.
