Starlink raises internet prices for Nigerians starting January

Starlink, Elon Musk’s satellite internet service, has announced higher monthly subscription prices in Nigeria.

The changes take effect immediately for new customers and on January 27, 2025, for existing users.

In an email to subscribers on Friday, the company explained that the price adjustments are needed to improve its network infrastructure and maintain high-quality service.

New Prices

The revised pricing is as follows:

– Standard (Residential): ₦75,000
– Mobile – Regional (Roam Unlimited): ₦167,000
– Mobile – Global (Global Roam): ₦717,000

“These changes reflect our commitment to investing in the infrastructure needed to support and improve your experience with Starlink,” the company said in the email.

Subscribers who no longer wish to continue with the service were informed that they could cancel their subscriptions at any time.

This isn’t the first time Starlink has attempted a price hike in Nigeria. In September, the company increased its standard monthly subscription fee from ₦38,000 to ₦75,000, citing inflation. The move drew criticism, and the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) initially threatened sanctions for the unapproved hike. However, the NCC later withdrew its statement, leading to uncertainty about regulatory approval.

Amid public backlash, Starlink temporarily suspended the increase and offered credits to affected customers while addressing regulatory concerns.

Starlink launched in Nigeria in December 2022, making the country the first in Africa to access its satellite-based internet service. While the service has been praised for connecting remote and underserved areas, its pricing model has drawn criticism. Many Nigerians argue the service is too expensive for the average citizen.

The latest price increase comes at a time when Nigerians are already dealing with tough economic conditions. This has raised concerns about whether Starlink’s services will remain accessible to a wide audience in the country.

Despite the challenges, Starlink maintains that the new prices will enable it to improve its services and continue expanding internet access across Nigeria.
