The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities and the Non-Academic Staff Union have jointly declared a seven-day warning strike in protest of their salaries that were withheld during the nationwide strike in 2022.
SSANU President, Mohammed Ibrahim, announced the decision at a press conference on Monday, revealing that the choice to initiate the strike was reached during a joint action committee meeting held in Akure, Ondo State, capital on Thursday and Friday.
Ibrahim, while addressing journalists in Abuja, read the communiqué of the meeting and explained the unions’ frustration with the situation. He stated that the decision to go on a warning strike came after numerous protest letters and communications with the Federal Government failed to yield any positive response.
“If nothing is done by the Federal Government to positively address this situation and respond to our previous letters to them, the members of the two unions may be forced to meet soon to take all lawful and stringent decisions on the matter,” the statement read.
The unions are taking this action as a last resort to draw attention to the unresolved issue of unpaid salaries stemming from the 2022 nationwide strike.
