Liverpool are one step away from the final of the 2021/22 UEFA Champions League after defeating Villareal 2-0 in the first leg of the semifinal clash at Anfield.

After seeing off the likes of Juventus and Bayern Munich, Unai Emery's giant-slaying Spanish side were hoping to repeat the feat against The Reds.

However, Jurgen Klopp's blistering hot squad appeared too much to handle for the visitors in front of the ever-vibrant Anfield faithful.

After a goalless first half, The Reds found the breakthrough courtesy of an own goal by Pervis Estupiñán (53') before Sadio Mané doubled the lead (55') to ensure Liverpool head into the second leg with a two-goal cushion.

Emery's side who left Anfield without a single shot on target will face a huge task when they welcome Klopp's side to the El Madrigal Stadium on May 3rd.

Since beating Everton at Goodison Park in August 2005, Villarreal are winless across their last nine away games in England in all competitions (D3 L6).

Liverpool have won nine matches in the UEFA Champions League this season, the most games they’ve ever won in a single campaign in European competition (excluding qualifiers).
