Cristiano Ronaldo scored a late winner as Manchester United defeated Villareal 2-1 at Old Trafford on Wednesday night.

United who suffered a shocking 2-1 defeat to Young Boys in their opener went behind through Paco Alcácer's 53rd-minute opener.

Alex Telles (60') pulled one back for the home side before Ronaldo (90+5') netted the late winner as Ole Gunnar Solskjer's men claimed their first Champions League victory.

United have now avenged their penalty shoot-out defeat to Unai Emery's men in last season's UEFA Europa League final.

Bruno Fernandes speaks to BT Sport. “It is always difficult to play against Spanish teams. We know they play really well. They are good on the ball. We know the coach also. They always play good football, and are really well organised in defence. But we did a good job. Sometimes we had to be patient, but I think we did the right job. The main thing was to get the three points and we got it. I always felt we could win the game, and turn it around. The push from the fans was incredible. Some big saves from David de Gea to keep it 1-1, then at the end Cristiano does it once again! Modern football has changed a little, it is not like in the past where the big teams who spend more win every time, now small teams who do not spend a lot are well organised and do really well, so your focus always has to be at a high level.”
