Real Madrid slump to 2-1 defeat against Sheriff at Bernabeau
Champions League debutants, Sheriff Tiraspol, silenced the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu by beating Real Madrid 2-1 on Tiesday night.
The Moldovans who began their Group D campaign with shocking 2-0 win over Shakhtar Donetsk at the Bolshaya Sportivnaya Arena in Moldova.
However, The Wasps stung harder in their second game against the 13-time champions by showing no respect for Carlo Ancelotti's side's gilded European history.
As expected, Sheriff did not find it easy at the Bernabeau as Madrid took control of the match from the whistle.
Benzema almost put the hosts with a well-taken free-kick that was parried away by Sheriff goalkeeper Giorgos Athanasiadis.
However, it was the visitors who took the lead against the run of play through Jasurbek Yakhshiboev who was at the receiving end of an inch-perfect cross from Cristiano before beating Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois.
Jasurbek Yakhshiboev almost doubled the lead after a mistake from Courtois but the drifted his shot well wide.
But Madrid would be stunned that despite their pressure in Sheriff area, Vinicius, Hazard and Benzema failed to finish chances just minutes apart.
However, Benzema restored parity later in the second half through the spot kick after Vinicius was fouled in the visitors box.
The hosts kept the pressure up in search of a winner but surprisingly, it was Sheriff who found the sensational 90th minute winner through Sébastien Thill 89'.
Sheriff go top of Group D with six points ahead of Madrid who beat Inter last time out with three points.
Inter and Shakhtar are third and fourth respectively after playing a goaless draw on Tuesday night.
