Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has congratulated the members of TeamNigeria who have won medals at the ongoing Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England.

Team Nigeria cruised into the top 10 on the medal table after securing three medals in the weightlifting category; two golds and a bronze.

Punch Metro reported that Nigeria won her first gold medal through Olarinoye Adenike Adijat who lifted a tournament record of 203kg in the Women’s 55kg category, followed by Edidiong Joseph Umoafia who clinched a bronze medal in the men’s 67kg and Rafiatu Folashade Lawal won Nigeria’s second gold medal with a Games-record in the women’s 59kg Weightlifting category.

In a congratulatory message on his verified Twitter handle on Monday, Obi described their achievements as heartwarming and hailed them for continuing to make the country proud.

“Heartwarming news from the Commonwealth Games. Adijat Adenike Olarinoye’s Games-record gold in the 55kg weightlifting and Rafiatu Folashade Lawal’s Games-record gold in the 59kg weightlifting event was followed by Edidiong Joseph Umoafia’s bronze in the men’s 67kg category.

“Congratulations to our talented youths who continue to make Nigeria proud,” he tweeted.

Meanwhile, Punch Metro reported that while the trio made the country proud in the United Kingdom, the commander of the Intelligence Response Team of the Nigerian Police Force, DCP Tunji Disu, represented Nigeria at the 33rd US Open Judo Championships and made the podium by claiming the Veteran Judo fighter Silver medal.

DCP Disu’s silver medal win adds to the list of strides the country’s citizens are making in the world of sports despite the economic and security challenges faced by the country.

Asisat Oshoala was crowned the 2022 African Women’s Footballer of the Year award in July, becoming the first player to win the continental award five times.

On July 25th Oluwatobiloba Amusan set a world record and won the gold medal in women’s 100m hurdles at the World Athletics Championships in Eugene, Oregon.

Nigeria remains hopeful for more medals at the ongoing Commonwealth Games in the table tennis and other categories.
