Man Utd qualify for Europa League despite Palace defeat

Published

Manchester United finished 6th in the 2021/22 Premier League season to qualify for next season’s Europa League despite losing 1-0 to Crystal Palace.

The Red Devils needed a victory to secure 6th place after losing out in the top four race to Tottenham and Arsenal but a victory for West Ham would see United drop to seventh and automatically qualify for the Europa Conference League.

Former Red Devil, Wilfred Zaha, scored the winner for Patrick Viera’s men in what appeared to be United’s worst-ever season in the EPL.

West Ham’s 3-1 defeat away to Brighton at the AMEX Stadium speared United’s blushes on the final day of the season as David Moyes’ men settle for the Europa Conference League.

United finished the season with a goal difference of zero, the first time they’ve not had a positive goal difference at the end of a league season since 1989-90 (-1).

The Red Devils ended the season with 58 points, eclipsing their previous low of 64 points in the 2013-2014 season under David Moyes.

On 22 April 2014, with four games remaining, Moyes was sacked as manager, less than a year into his six-year contract. His last game, two days earlier, had ended in a 2–0 defeat at his old club Everton. 40-year-old player-coach Ryan Giggs was placed in charge of United’s remaining games.

While Sunday’s defeat was United’s sixth consecutive away defeat for the first time since March 1981, Palace secured their first victory over United at Selhurst Park since the 3-0 victory in May 1991, ending a run of 13 consecutive home defeats in the league.

United will begin the new season on a clean slate with new manager, Erik ten Hag, present at the defeat on the final day of the 2021/22 season.
