Manchester United have reached an agreement of around £41m with Spanish giant, Real Madrid, for the signing of French defender, Raphaël Varane.

According to SkySports, the price for the France international is believed to include add-ons and the deal is set to go through, subject to a medical.

WuzupNigeria, quoting UK Guardian, Sky and Fabrizio Romano, reported that the Premier League club is edging closer to landing the former Lens defender who played all of France's EURO 2020 match until their elimination by Switzerland in the Round of 16.

Romano, in an update, tweeted that "Raphaël Varane contract with Manchester United will be on a four-year basis with option to extend until June 2026. Personal terms agreed since days and paperwork prepared in the last few hours."

Meanwhile, United legend, Rio Ferdinand, has already welcomed the French defender to Old Trafford, though there has been no official confirmation yet from both clubs.

"Yes, we have done it, Man United have signed Raphael Varane. What a signing. it must have come from the player, he must have wanted to leave. he must have wanted to be a part of the new Manchester United way. he's played in 14 finals Raphael Varane and won 14 finals," Ferdinand said on his 'FIVE' podcast.

The former United defender revealed that the Red Devils almost signed the Frenchman in 2011 from Lens before he opted to join Madrid where he became established as one of the world's top defenders.

Ferdinand added, "He[Varane] actually was on Manchester united's radar in 2011. It didn't happen, he ended up going to Real Madrid, obviously, Zidane must have played a big part in that.

"What does he bring [to Man United]? He brings pace, understanding of how to win, he knows how to get it done in the big games. Big games won't phase this guy… He covers people well.

"He has to understand as well, the English game is different. He's going to be asked to defend in a different way and that's where he has to show his real class."

Varane has gone on to make over 350 appearances for the club, and be capped 79 times by France, helping them to World Cup glory in 2018.

If United do secure his services, Varane will be their third acquisition of the summer. Last week, Jadon Sancho completed his £73m move from Borussia Dortmund, and they have also re-signed the goalkeeper Tom Heaton, following his departure from Burnley.
