Manchester United on Wednesday announced the departure of English midfielder, Jesse Lingard.

The club revealed that the England international will exit the club at the end of his contract by June 30.

Lingard, who grew through the United ranks as an academy player, will leave the club on a free transfer.

His departure comes hours after the club announced that French midfielder, Paul Pogba, will also be leaving for free at the end of June.

Lingard who joined United as an eight-year-old will leave after making 232 appearances and netting 35 times for the club.

United's statement read partly, "We'd like to take this opportunity to thank Jesse for all of the memories he's helped create during his two decades here and wish him the best of luck in his future career."

Reacting, Lingard thanked the club and noted that United will always remain in his heart.

While Pogba could end up returning to Italian side, Juventus, Lingard, has been strongly linked with a move back to West Ham.

The 29-year-old had a fantastic six-month loan spell with David Moyes' side, netting nine goals for the Hammers in the 2020/21 season.

However, United have opened talks with Barcelona for the signing of Dutch midfielder, Frenkie de Jong, who is reported to be a priority signing for new manager, Erik ten Hag.

"Manchester United have opened direct talks with Barça for Frenkie de Jong. The price tag is around €85m, waiting for an opening bid," popular journalist, Fabrizio Romano, reported.

However, United are far from close to signing De Jong deal despite the Netherlands international's relationship with Ten Hag who was the 25-year-old's coach at Ajax and was part of the side that won the 2018/19 Eredivisie title and reached the Champions League semi-finals.

Romano added, "De Jong is still not convinced to leave Barça and he wants UCL football - Man Utd will try to push again as Barça need to solve financial issues."
