Defending Champions Manchester City have defeated Brentford 1-0 to go eight points clear at the top of the Premier League on Wednesday night.

Pep Guardiola's men came into their final game of the year 2021 six points clear after Liverpool slipped to a 1-0 defeat at the King Power Stadium on Tuesday night.

The Citizens were handed another boost after Chelsea dropped two vital points against Brighton, thanks to a late equaliser from Danny Welbeck earlier today.

Youngster Phil Foden put the cherry on the icing for Guardiola's side by scoring the only goal of the game after a sublime assist from Kevin De Bruyne (16').

City were not at their best on the night but managed to secure their 10th consecutive EPL win.

Brentford, on the other hand, would be happy with their performance against a City squad who have scored multiple goals against their precious opponents.

City head into the New Year with 50 points, eight ahead of second-placed Chelsea and nine ahead of third-placed Liverpool.
