Liverpool beat Chelsea 11-10 on penalties to lift Carabao Cup trophy

Liverpool have lifted the Carabao Cup trophy by defeating Chelsea in a penalty shootout at the Wembley Stadium on Saturday night.

Both sides went head to head in what proved to be an epic cup final registering a combined 31 throughout 120 minutes of play including extra time.

Although Liverpool had six shots on target against Chelsea’s four, Eduoard Mendy who was replaced by Kepa Arrizabalaga for the shootout and Caoimhin Kelleher denied both sides from scoring, forcing the game into the shootout.

James Milner and Marcos Alonso netted their first for both clubs to begin the epic shootout.

Fabinho beat Arrizabalaga with a panenka to make it 2-1 in favour of Liverpool but Romelu Lukaku levelled up for The Blues to his the pressure on him.

Kai Havertz cancelled out Virgil Van Dijk’s take to make it 3-3 as the tense shootout continue with a surprise goal-fest.

Trent Alexander-Arnold blasted into the net but his right-back counterpart Reece James made it 4-4 for The Blues.

Mohammed Salah smashed his take into the top corner to make it 5-4, leaving Arrizabalaga with no chance of a save as does Jorginho who made it 5-5.

Diogo Jota stepped up to give The Reds a 6-5 lead which was quickly erased by Antonio Rudiger who sent Kelleher the wrong way.

After 12 takes, both sides showed no sign of cracking and the painstaking shootout extended to 7-all when Divock Origi and Ngolo Kante converted theirs.

Andy Robertson scored to make it 8-7 leaving Timo Werner with all tension but the German was able to heave a sigh of relief when he scored his penalty which was almost saved by Kelleher.

18-year-old Elliot gave Liverpool a 9-8 lead and 38-year-old Thiago Siva made sure he kept Chelsea in contention.

Ibrahima Konate almost had his penalty saved by Kepa who had a little contact on the kick but the defender netted as does Trevor Chalobar who made it 10-10, leaving the shootout to the goalkeepers.

Kelleher converted to make it 11- 10 but Kepa who has been the hero for Chelsea in recent shootouts blasted his shot to the fans as Liverpool claimed the trophy.
