Gov Emmanuel fancies Akwa United to conquer Africa
Akwa Ibom State Governor, Udom Emmanuel, has tipped newly crowned Nigeria Professional Football League champion, Akwa United FC, to conquer Africa.
Emmanuel’s statement comes less than 24 hours after Akwa United were confirmed the winner of the 2020/21 NPFL season, with a game to spare, following a 5-2 thumping of MFM FC in Uyo on Sunday.
WuzupNigeria reported that the trophy was the Promise Keepers’ first in their 25-year history, earning them an automatic qualification to the Confederation of African Football Champions League.
The Governor, according to The PUNCH, went further to promise the NPFL champions the necessary support at the continental level.
“Today, they have conquered Nigeria, we are looking forward to conquering Africa and I will give them the maximum support to make sure they conquer Africa. Once we conquer Africa, we’ll go to World Club tournament then we will conquer the World, that’s our vision”, the governor assured.
He added, “Today, I will be surprised if the Super Eagles do not take this team to represent Nigeria, it means they don’t want to win a trophy, the whole team can represent Nigeria in any tournament, they would have been at Olympics and I am sure they would have gotten a gold medal today.”
The Governor thanked the NPFL and Nigeria Football Federation for sports management in the country, as he re-echoed his commitment towards sports development in the state, noting that youths will be empowered through sports which have been one of the targets of his Completion Agenda.
