Falcao scores as Rayo Vallecano secure first win over Barcelona in 19 years
Radamel Falcao’s first-half goal helped Rayo Vallecano defeat Barcelona for the first time in 19 years in the Spanish La Liga on Wednesday night.
Vallecano last defeated Barcelona on December 7, 2002, when Jorge Azkoitia Gabiola’s 65th loan goal sunk Louis van Gaal’s Catalan side.
Coming from a 2-1 El Classico home loss to Real Madrid last Sunday, Ronald Koeman’s side remained a shadow of themselves throughout the game.
Sergio Busquets was caught napping on the ball and the steal led to the Colombian’s opener in the 30th minute.
Barcelona’s only shot on target came from a penalty after Depay was pulled down by Valentin, but he couldn’t capitalise as Dimitrievski made a good save to deny him and protect his clean sheet.
Koeman’s side who continue to struggle in the post-Lionel Messi era have now dropped to 9th position on the log.
Vallecano, on the other hand, moved to 5th with 19 points, one behind Real Madrid and four ahead of Barcelona.
Sevilla, Real Betis and Real Sociedad are joint top of La Liga with 21 points.
