West Ham United have booked their spot in the quarter-finals of the EFL Carabao Cup by defeating holders Manchester City 5-3 on penalties.
Pep Guardiola’s men will not be in the finals this season for the first time since the 2016/17 season having won the cup four times from 2017/18 – 2020/21 seasons.
David Moyes’ side who eliminated Manchester United in the third-round sunk their noisy neighbours, ensuring that there will be a new winner for the first time in four years.
City had the larger share of the possession with seven of their 25 shots on target while the Hammers register only two close-range attempts out of seven throughout 90 minutes.
Alphonse Areola and Zack Steffen were solid through regular time as they denied both sides’ advances, forcing the game to be decided on penalties.
Mark Noble made up for his stoppage-time miss against United in the Premier League by bashing the first one down the middle but Phil Foden fumbled his kick to give West Hame the one-goal advantage.
Steffen tried but failed to stop Jarrod Bowen from giving the Hammers a two-goal advantage but Joao Cancelo converted his kick (2-1) to keep Guardiola’s side in contention.
Craig Dawson, Gabriel Jesus, Aaron Cresswell and Jack Grealish all converted to keep the score 4-3, leaving the Hammers with the deciding fifth kick.
Saïd Benrahma decided the tie by scoring the Hammers’ fifth to send Moyer’s side into the last eight (5-3).
