Sporting Lisbon sack coach Pereira after poor results

Sporting Lisbon has sacked coach Joao Pereira just weeks after he took over from Ruben Amorim, following a series of disappointing performances.

The club made the announcement on Thursday, appointing Rui Borges as the new head coach. Borges, 43, was formerly in charge of Vitoria Guimaraes and led them to notable success in the UEFA Conference League.

Pereira replaced Amorim, who left Sporting to join Manchester United, but struggled to maintain the team’s earlier form.

Under Pereira’s leadership, Sporting lost their 100% record in the Primeira Liga, dropping to second place after a goalless draw with Gil Vicente last weekend. His reign also saw four consecutive losses in both the domestic league and the Champions League.

Rui Borges now faces the challenge of reviving Sporting’s season. Known for his achievements with Vitoria Guimaraes, including guiding them to a strong finish in the UEFA Conference League, Borges is expected to bring stability and a winning mentality to the club.

Sporting fans will be watching closely as the team seeks to regain its top form and challenge rivals Benfica for the league title.
