A truck driver has died in a crash along the Sagamu–Ijebu Ode Expressway in Ogun State after reportedly speeding and losing control of his vehicle.

The incident happened around 6 pm on Thursday near the Babcock slope area of the expressway. According to a traffic update from the spokesperson of the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency, Babatunde Akinbiyi, the accident involved a blue Fiat truck with the number plate AAA 176 YA.

Two people were in the truck when the crash occurred. The driver, an adult male, died at the scene while the second person, identified as the motor boy, suffered serious injuries.

“The accident involved a blue Fiat truck with registration AAA 176 YA. Two adult males were involved. One adult male (driver) lost his life while one adult male (motor boy) was injured,” Akinbiyi said.

He explained that the driver was overspeeding, lost control of the vehicle, and drove off the road into a ditch.

“According to preliminary police investigation, the driver was speeding excessively and lost control, veering wildly into the ditch,” he added.

Akinbiyi said officers of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps rescued the injured motor boy and took him to the Ikenne General Hospital for treatment. The body of the driver was taken to the mortuary at the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital, Sagamu.

This latest accident adds to the rising number of road crashes in Nigeria. Just earlier this week, about 19 people died and eight others were injured in a separate crash along the Lokoja-Obajana Road.

Officials continue to urge drivers to obey traffic laws and avoid overspeeding to prevent further loss of lives.
