South Africa refuses to deport Nigerians detained for visa violations, says no funds for their flight
The National Chairman, Christian Association of Nigeria, South Africa, Archbishop Benson Uhwa, said arrangements were being made to evacuate Nigerians in police custody back to Nigeria.
He explained that many Nigerians detained for visa violations had been languishing in South African police custody for a long time.
Uhwa, a member the Nigerian community coordinating the evacuation of Nigerians over the ongoing xenophobic attacks in South Africa, said in a Punch Newspaper on Monday that the South African authorities refused to deport the detainees, claiming that they had no funds for their flight.
WuzupNigeria reports that Nigerians and other foreigners in South Africa have been victims of xenophobic attacks in recent times.
Yesterday, South Africans, residing in eastern Johannesburg, marched along Jules Street in the area, demanding that foreign nationals leave their country.
Meanwhile, Former Aviation Minister, Femi Fani-Kayode, has called for the expulsion of all South African citizens from Nigeria following a renewed protest against Nigerians.
Fani-Kayode called on the Nigerian government to expel South Africans from the country and nationalise all South African companies that are operating in Nigeria.
He also called on President Muhammadu Buhari’s government to retaliate the attacks and break up diplomatic ties with South Africa.
