South African policemen torture Nigerian businessman to death

A businessman from Imo state, Kingsley Ikeri has been killed in Vryheid town, Kwazulu Natal province South Africa, the Nigeria union in South Africa has reported.

The 27-year-old businessman was reportedly killed on Wednesday.

Chairman of the union in the province Bartholomew Eziagulu, told News Agency of Nigeria that Ikeri was allegedly tortured to death by police officers.

Eziagulu said the police used plastic bag to cover his face in a bid to get information from him.

“In the process, they suffocated the deceased. When the police took him to the hospital, he was confirmed dead,” the chairman of the union, said.

Adetola Olubajo, the secretary general of the union, said the national secretariat had been informed about the death of Ikeri.

Olubajo said the Nigerian authorities and the police in South Africa have also been notified.

Ikeri’s death happened two weeks after Uchena Eloh, a Nigerian, was killed by policemen in the Western Cape province of the country.

In December 2016, Metropolitan police in Cape Town had suffocated Victor Nnadi, also a businessman from Imo, to death.

Abike Dabiri-Erewa, special assistant to the president on foreign affairs and diaspora matters, said a total 116 Nigerians have been killed in South Africa through extrajudicial means in the last two years.
