The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar III, has described social media as a “terrorist organisation” and called on security agencies to take serious action against it.

Speaking on Wednesday in a video shared by News Central, the respected traditional leader said social media has become a major threat because it allows people to spread false stories that can cause trouble in society.

“What happened has happened. You cannot come and be doing social media because that is one terrorist organisation,” the Sultan said during his speech.

He went on to say, “Social media is a terrorist organisation. What they do—somebody will sit down in his comfort zone and formulate stories, and you will discover that it is not true.”

The Sultan warned that fake news and misinformation shared online could damage peace and unity in the country. He stressed that such behaviour must be checked before it leads to more problems.

“So, social media is a terrorist organisation that we must deal with. Security agencies must deal with this terrorist organisation called social media,” he added.
