Prince Al-Waleed bin Khaled bin Talal Al Saud has passed away at the age of 36, nearly two decades after a devastating car accident left him in a prolonged coma.

His father, Prince Khaled bin Talal bin Abdulaziz, announced the news on Saturday in a heartfelt message shared on social media.

“With hearts believing in Allah’s will and decree, and with deep sorrow and sadness, we mourn our beloved son: Prince Al-Waleed bin Khaled bin Talal bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, may Allah have mercy on him, who passed away today,” the grieving father wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.

The prince’s life was tragically altered in 2005 when he suffered a severe brain hemorrhage during a car crash while studying at a military college in London.

Following the accident, he was transferred to King Abdulaziz Medical City in Riyadh, where he remained in a comatose state for nearly 20 years.

Known affectionately as the “Sleeping Prince” among Saudis, Prince Al-Waleed became one of the longest-known coma patients globally.

His condition drew national attention, and he remained under continuous care in a state-of-the-art facility in Riyadh.

His story became a poignant symbol across the Kingdom, representing both tragedy and enduring family loyalty.

Despite never regaining consciousness, the prince’s care was meticulously maintained, a reflection of his family’s deep commitment over the years.

Funeral arrangements have not yet been made public, though it is expected that traditional Islamic burial rites will be followed.

An official statement from the Saudi royal court is anticipated in the coming days.
