South Korean police have concluded an investigation into the discovery of fetal remains at a wastewater treatment facility in Asan, South Chungcheong Province, after forensic examinations established that the fetus had died before birth, with no indication of criminal activity.
The remains were discovered on September 28 at the wastewater treatment plant, according to the Asan Police Station.
Initial examinations estimated that the fetus was approximately 16 weeks old, with a body length of about 20 centimetres and a weight of roughly 110 grammes.
Investigators subsequently identified the mother through DNA analysis. During questioning, the woman explained that she had experienced abdominal discomfort and went to the toilet, believing she needed to pass stool. She reportedly flushed the toilet without knowing that she had miscarried.
Police suspect the remains were carried through the sewage network into the treatment facility. The plant receives wastewater from surrounding residential communities, businesses and dormitory buildings serving an industrial complex, as well as neighbourhoods in Asan’s Tangjeong district.
A post-mortem examination conducted by the National Forensic Service confirmed that the fetus had died before delivery. Following the forensic findings and the absence of evidence suggesting a criminal offence, police announced on Friday that the investigation had been formally closed.
