Popular Nigerian musicians Babatunde Peter Olaitan, known as Tee Dollar, and Tobilola Olamide, popularly called Tobi Nation, have been sentenced to six months imprisonment for the abuse of the naira.
The sentencing followed their prosecution by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.
In a statement released by the EFCC, the artists were convicted by Justice Alexander Owoeye of the Federal High Court sitting in Ikoyi, Lagos.
The agency outlined that the offence stemmed from actions that contravened Section 21(1) of the Central Bank Act, 2007.
Tee Dollar was reported to have tampered with N200 notes issued by the Central Bank of Nigeria by spraying them at a public event, an act deemed illegal under the law.
Similarly, Tobi Nation was said to have abused naira notes while dancing at an event, also violating the same provision of the Central Bank Act.
Both celebrities pleaded guilty to the charges brought against them. Justice Owoeye subsequently handed down a six-month prison sentence to each of the defendants, with an option to pay a fine of N200,000.
This case adds to a growing list of naira abuse incidents involving Nigerian celebrities.
Others previously summoned or penalized by the EFCC include E-Money, Cubana Chiefpriest, and Bobrisky.
While some served jail terms, others paid fines or received warnings from the anti-graft agency.
