Former Super Eagles coach Samson Siasia has strongly opposed the idea of hiring a foreign manager for Nigeria’s national football team.

His comments come as the Nigeria Football Federation considers appointing a foreign coach to lead the team in the ongoing 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

Siasia dismissed the need for a foreign coach, saying, “We don’t want any foreign coach here because they are not coming to do anything. We have enough good materials at home that we should not be talking about hiring a foreign coach.”

The Super Eagles are struggling in their qualification campaign, sitting fifth in their group with just three points from four matches, behind Rwanda, South Africa, Benin Republic, and Lesotho.

Siasia also addressed the situation of interim head coach Austine Eguavoen, urging him to step down and focus on his role as the NFF’s technical director. While Eguavoen guided the team to qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations next year, the NFF has yet to clarify his future with the team.

“Eguavoen already has a job as technical director,” Siasia said. “He should resign as Super Eagles manager and concentrate on his job. He cannot hold two positions at the same time. He should actually decide on which one to hold and leave the other.”

Siasia’s remarks come after completing a five-year FIFA ban for a match-fixing allegation. The ban, initially a lifetime sentence, was reduced by the Court of Arbitration for Sports in 2019.
