Vice President Kashim Shettima on Tuesday visit Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State, to assess the severe flooding that has displaced many communities.

He promised Nigerians that President Bola Tinubu’s administration will tackle the problem of frequent flooding in the country.

He stated that a comprehensive plan has already been developed to address this issue.

In a statement by his spokesman, Stanley Nkwocha, Shettima described the flood as “the most catastrophic flood in Maiduguri in over three decades.” He expressed regret that despite the government’s detailed plans and proactive measures to reduce the impacts based on the 2024 flood outlooks, the severity of the flood has been much worse than expected.

While expressing sympathy to the victims, the Vice President said, “The President did not only express his deepest sympathies but has also assured that the federal government will prioritise the welfare of the affected communities.”

The flood, which started over the weekend, has worsened and is blamed on excess water from the Alau Dam and the collapse of the spillways.

This has caused a large surge of water downstream, leading to widespread flooding in nearby communities.
