President Bola Tinubu has directed Vice-President Kashim Shettima to represent Nigeria at the 2024 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Apia, Samoa.

The announcement was made on Sunday by Stanley Nkwocha, the president’s senior special assistant on media and communications.

The summit, which will take place from October 21 to 26, will see leaders from 56 Commonwealth member countries, including King Charles of England, gather to discuss important global issues. The theme for this year’s meeting is “One Resilient Common Future: Transforming Our Commonwealth,” with discussions focusing on resilience, economic potential, and the growth of a digitally connected Commonwealth.

Vice-President Shettima will join other global leaders to address critical issues like the global economy, environmental sustainability, and security. He will also focus on how Commonwealth nations can work together to boost trade, innovation, and economic growth. An important part of the discussions will be on how to empower the 1.5 billion young people in Commonwealth nations for a peaceful and sustainable future.

A key agenda item at this year’s summit is the election of a new Commonwealth Secretary-General, with candidates from Lesotho, Ghana, and The Gambia in the running. Since the next leader is expected to come from Africa, Nigeria, being the largest African member of the Commonwealth, is anticipated to play an important role in this decision.

During the summit, Shettima will also participate in key forums like the Commonwealth Business Forum and the People’s Forum.

He is expected to hold bilateral meetings with world leaders and work to attract foreign investors to Nigeria.
