Sheffield Utd women sack coach amid bullying allegations

Published

Sheffield United Women have made the decision to terminate the contract of football coach Jonathan Morgan in response to allegations of player bullying and subsequent revelations about his conduct before joining the club. The club cited “new information” that has come to light, deeming Morgan’s position untenable.

Morgan, who previously managed Leicester’s women’s first team from 2014 to 2021 before moving to Burnley and later joining Sheffield United in February 2023, faced accusations of misconduct, prompting his dismissal.

His former representatives at Tongue Tied Management also announced the severance of their ties with him following the emergence of concerning details regarding his interactions with a player under his charge.

“While we initially stood by Mr. Morgan, new facts have emerged that necessitate immediate action,” stated a spokesperson for Tongue Tied Management. “We are committed to maintaining the highest standards of integrity and safeguarding within our agency and the broader sports industry.”

The termination of Morgan’s contract is unrelated to the ongoing FA investigation into the tragic death of Sheffield United player Maddy Cusack, who took her own life last year at her home in Horsley, Derbyshire. While authorities did not find her death suspicious, Cusack’s family alleges that her mental health deteriorated due to mistreatment by Morgan.

“Maddy was a happy-go-lucky, carefree girl with everything to live for, but her spirit was gradually broken under Mr. Morgan’s supervision,” expressed Deborah Cusack, Maddy’s mother and a founding member of the Maddy Cusack Foundation. “We demand accountability for the actions that contributed to her decline.”

Despite Sheffield United initially clearing Morgan of any wrongdoing following an external inquiry, the Cusack family remains steadfast in their belief that Morgan’s behavior significantly impacted Maddy’s well-being.

They assert that had it not been for the coach’s alleged mistreatment, Maddy would still be alive today.

Morgan, who has denied the allegations against him, remains embroiled in controversy as Sheffield United Women navigate the aftermath of these revelations.

The club reaffirms its commitment to maintaining a safe and supportive environment for all players and staff members, prioritizing the well-being and integrity of its members above all else.
