Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu has hailed the decision of University of Lagos to fire two lecturers indicted in the BBC sex-for-grade documentary.
Sanwo-Olu stated that the institution has maintained its unblemished record sustaining discipline and excellence.
The disgraced lecturers identified as Boniface Igbeneghu and Samuel Omoniyi Oladipo were exposed in BBC Investigative Series, Africa Eye, requesting sex from an undercover reporter who posed as a 17-year-old admission seeker.
The documentary was aired in October 2019.
Commenting on the sanction, Sanwo-Olu stated that UNILAG has redeemed its reputation, which will further serve as a deterrent to other members of staff.
According to Daily Post, the governor made the statement on Thursday at a meeting with members of the Federal Government Visitation Panel for UNILAG at the State House in Marina.
The panel members were led by the chairman, Lt. Gen. Martin Luther Agwai (rtd), a former Chief of Defence Staff and Chief of Army Staff.
“The school has maintained high discipline with lecturers who want to bring down the image and name of the school”, Sanwo-Olu said.
“These are parts of the commendable steps which the school management has taken to ensure the standards are sustained.”
Sanwo-Olu reiterated his administration’s commitment to raise standards of education and academic research in Lagos.
He reassured that the Lagos would fulfil its pledge to construct a standard jetty at the UNILAG waterfront.
