In a thrilling UEFA Champions League encounter, RC Lens clinched a crucial 2-1 win over defending champions Sevilla, securing third place in Group B and a coveted spot in the UEFA Europa League.

Sevilla, led by the inspirational Sergio Ramos, applied late pressure on Lens, knowing that the winner would determine who advances to the Europa League in the new year. Despite Sevilla’s dominance, Lens emerged victorious with Angelo Fulgini’s late goal ensuring their progression.

The first half saw an unusual incident as Sevilla was awarded an indirect free-kick on the edge of Lens’ six-yard box.

However, the Ligue 1 side’s defense blocked Ivan Rakitic’s attempt. The first half remained relatively quiet, with Rakitic’s fierce shot being the only notable moment, expertly tipped over the bar by Lens goalkeeper Brice Samba.

Sevilla continued their dominance in the second half, with Adria Pedrosa hitting the woodwork. Lens took control when Przemyslaw Frankowski converted a penalty.

Sevilla had a chance to level the score with a penalty, but Ramos’ initial attempt was saved by Samba, only for VAR to rule a retake due to the goalkeeper coming off his line.

Ramos converted on his second attempt, setting the stage for a frantic finish.

However, Lens secured the win with Fulgini’s late goal, sealing their spot in the Europa League.

Meanwhile, in Group B, Arsenal, already qualified for the round of 16 as winners, experienced a night of firsts as they drew 1-1 with PSV in Eindhoven. Eddie Nketiah scored his first Champions League goal, and Aaron Ramsdale made his debut in the competition.

The match saw standout performances from William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhaes, with Nketiah scoring a cool strike before PSV equalized through Yorbe Vertessen. Arsenal had chances to win, but Gabriel’s late effort was ruled out for offside.
