Seven perish in Enugu auto crash (photos)



The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), has confirmed the death of seven people in a road crash that occurred on Thursday in Aki-na-Ukwa junction, Awgu Local Government Area of Enugu State on Enugu- Port Harcourt Express.

The State Sector Commander, Mr Ogbonnaya Kalu who confirmed the incident on telephone described the accident as an unfortunate tragedy, saying that the crash was caused as a result of brake failure.

He said “I am coming back from the scene of the accident now. We have found a way of removing the trailer from the trapped vehicles.

“The trailer’s brake failed and ran into shops along that place and finally ended in a mechanic workshop where three vehicles parked were smashed. We are working to remove the trailer from the area and see if there are people that were still trapped.

“Seven persons died and their bodies have been deposited at a hospital morgue in the area,” he said.

An eyewitness who gave his name as Uche Stanley told our correspondent that the accident occurred around 4 pm on Thursday.

According to him, “A truck carrying NB Product that was fully loaded with beer was coming from Port- Harcourt to Enugu. All of a sudden is either the driver is sleeping or it failed break but next thing he could not control the stirring and he ran into lockup shops at Aki-na-Ukwa junction.

“The truck crushed those who were selling bread and water at the junction.

“As at Thursday night, it was seven people that died and by this morning they are still trying to remove the trailer and know if there are people that were still trapped.

“The most painful was a lady the trailer trapped and the husband was there looking at the wife but could not help her until she gave up the ghost waving at him,” he said.
