The Lagos State Government has arraigned seven individuals before the Special Offences (Mobile) Court sitting in Ikeja over the alleged assault of enforcement officers of the Lagos Waste Management Authority during an environmental monitoring operation.
The defendants — Olamilekan Abdullahi, 21; Akeem Olamilekan, 24; Frank Tom, 25; Sakiru Jamiu, 20; Emmanuel Abiodun, 41; Olarewanju Onyowale, 35; and Taiwo Yusuf, 30 — were reportedly apprehended by LAWMA enforcement officials on March 8, 2026.
Authorities said the suspects were arrested around the Moshalashi Jimoh area of Lagos Island during a routine exercise aimed at tackling indiscriminate waste disposal in the community.
They were arraigned on a five-count charge which includes conduct likely to cause a breach of peace, illegal dumping of waste at an unauthorised site, failure to engage the services of an approved Private Sector Participant (PSP) waste operator, obstruction of enforcement officers while carrying out their duties, and assault.
Following their arraignment, the court adjourned the matter until April 24, 2026, when the trial is expected to begin.
The court, however, granted each defendant bail in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties required for each of them. One of the sureties must be a recognised community leader, while the other must be a relative with verifiable employment.
Pending the fulfilment of the bail conditions, the court directed that the defendants be remanded in a correctional facility.
Meanwhile, LAWMA reiterated that any form of attack or obstruction against its enforcement personnel is a serious offence under Lagos State environmental regulations.
The agency also warned that anyone who disrupts environmental enforcement activities will be prosecuted in accordance with the law.
