Serena Williams Tokyo Olympics

Twenty-three time Grand Slam winner, Serena Williams, has ruled herself out of the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics Games starting next month.

Speaking at her pre-Wimbledon press conference on Sunday, the 39-year-old American Tennis superstar said she was unaware that she has been listed on the team for next summer’s Games of the Olympiads.

“I’m actually not on the Olympic list, so… Not that I’m aware of. If so, then I shouldn’t be on it. There’s a lot of reasons that I made my Olympic decision,” Williams said Sunday. “I don’t really want to — I don’t feel like going into them today. Maybe another day. Sorry.”

Asked what it will be like to sit out the Summer Games, Williams replied: “I have not thought about it. In the past, it’s been a wonderful place for me. I really haven’t thought about it, so I’m going to keep not thinking about it.”

The former World No. 1 becomes the latest big star, after Rafael Nadal and Dominic Thiem, to announce they won’t be participating in the games that was delayed by a year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
