Senate urges increased investment in sports development
The Senate has called on the Federal Government to boost investments in sports development nationwide following the success of Nigerian athletes at the recent CAF awards.
Senator Sumalia Kawu, the chairman of the Senate Committee on Sports Development, emphasized the significance of the awards as “bold and big statements made on behalf of Nigeria by the winners.”
Speaking in Abuja on Wednesday, Senator Kawu stated that the accolades should serve as a wake-up call for the government to enhance its support for sports and involve the private sector more actively.
The CAF awards saw Victor Osimhen and Asisat Oshoala named African Player of the Year in the men’s and women’s categories, respectively. Chiamaka Nnadozie received the Best Keeper of the Year award, and the Super Falcons were recognized as the Best Women’s National Team.
Senator Kawu commended President Bola Tinubu, Sports Minister John Enoh, and the Nigeria Football Federation for the achievements of Nigerians at the awards.
He hailed the developments as a “new dawn” for sports in the country under Tinubu’s “Renewed Hope” agenda.
