The Senate Minority Leader, Lere Oyewumi, has left the Peoples Democratic Party and joined the Accord Party.

Oyewumi, who represents Osun West Senatorial District, officially registered with the Accord Party on Monday in his hometown located in Ward 9 of Irewole Local Government Area.

The event attracted dozens of party members and supporters of the Accord Party who gathered to welcome the senator into their political fold.

His defection comes at a time when the PDP is grappling with an internal leadership crisis.

The dispute is linked to a string of legal battles arising from the party’s controversial national convention held in Ibadan.

Earlier in 2025, two senators and three members of the House of Representatives from Osun State also left the PDP to join the All Progressives Congress (APC).

In December 2025, the state governor, Ademola Adeleke, defected to the Accord Party and has since been followed by several lawmakers in the state.
