Senate condemns murder corps member in Kaduna

The Senate on Wednesday condemned the gruesome murder of a serving National Youth Service Corps member, Chalya Silas, in Kaduna State.

Adopting a motion sponsored by Senator Napoleon Bali, the Senate stated with grief the gruesome murder of the 24-year-old National Youth Service Corps member on the 18th of October, 2023.

Silas, the only child of her widowed mother, was stabbed by hoodlums during an early morning exercise in Kaduna, where she was on one year of mandatory service to her fatherland.

The motion also noted that Chalya was an enthusiastic NYSC member from Langtang-North Local Government area of Plateau State who actively contributed to community development projects during her assignment in Kaduna State.

The Senate stated that her untimely death underscores the security challenges faced by the nation and serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need for improved security measures and safeguards for the lives and aspirations of all citizens, including vulnerable individuals like NYSC members.

The Deputy Senate President, Jibrin Barau, who presided over plenary, tasked the security agencies to strengthen the security system to forestall such occurrences.

He said that the gruesome murder of a girl of just 24 years should not continue happening in the country.

The gruesome murder of a girl of just 24 years; we should not allow this kind of murder to continue happening in this country.

“It is therefore important that all our security agencies should be playing the roles they need to do to prevent this kind of murder from occurring on our land in the future,” he said.
