A 25-year-old secondary school graduate, Hindatu Umar, has become Nigeria’s youngest female local government chairperson in Nigeria.

Surprisingly, the record feat happened in the mainly Muslim northern part of the country. The young woman, who was appointed by the Kebbi State governor, Abubakar Atiku Bagudu, resumed duty on Friday.

Hindatu Umar is also first woman to hold the position in Argungu city, in the north-western state of Kebbi. She is also the city’s first unmarried local leader of the city, which is home to the popular Argungu fishing festival.

She had been the deputy chairperson and was promoted when the tenure of the local chairman expired.
